URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — As the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s pro-Palestine encampment continues into its second week, three state lawmakers are visiting to warn about upticks in antisemitism.
State Representatives Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield), Dan Didech (D-Buffalo Grove), and Tracy Katz Muhl (D-Northbrook) spoke at University of Illinois’ quad on Monday (Holocaust Remembrance Day) about the rise of antisemitism. They were joined by local Jewish leaders, including Rabbi Dovid Tiechtel from Illini Chabad and Erez Cohen from Illini Hillel.
The representatives said encampments built on college campuses across the state increase safety concerns for Jewish students, staff and faculty with some chants. They also pointed out the encampment on the quad violates University policies.
"I am here to support Jewish students, staff and faculty of the University of Illinois and their allies," Morgan said in a news release ahead of the visit. "No one should ever bully them in a public institution like our flagship University. It is important that the University of Illinois shows leadership by enforcing its own policies and reducing lawlessness."
The state representatives also met with University leadership.
On Friday, two other state representatives, Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) and Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid (D-Berwyn) visited the encampment on campus, and spoke to the pro-Palestinian gathering. The UIUC Faculty for Justice in Palestine announced a rally on the main quad Monday evening.
