Riverside has honored late Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough with a proclamation commending her public service.

At its April 18 meeting, the Riverside village board issued a proclamation to honor Yarbrough, who died April 7 at 73 after being hospitalized April 2 with an undisclosed illness.

“We, the members of the Village Board of Trustees, do hereby express to Yarbrough’s family and loved ones our sincere condolences and appreciation for her outstanding service, support and dedication to the Village of Riverside and Cook County Residents,” the proclamation said.

Yarbrough was first elected the clerk of Cook County in 2018, making her the first woman and Black person to hold the position. She was re-elected in 2022. Yarbrough’s duties included overseeing election processes, maintaining tax maps and administering records. Before her election as clerk, Yarbrough served as Cook County’s recorder of deeds from 2012-2018.

Yarbrough’s niece, Cook County Circuit Judge Chloé Pedersen, attended the meeting alongside Yarbrough’s sister and spoke after Village President Douglas Pollock read the proclamation at the start of the meeting.

“Some of you may not know — some of you may know — that Karen Yarbrough was my aunt. I have with me her sister, next in line in our family, so we’re both here and graciously accept the proclamation and truly want to express our heartfelt thanks to all of you,” Pedersen said. “She was a dedicated public servant for many years, opening doors, forging new paths and always mentoring and bringing others along. I hope we can continue to honor her by continuing that work, and thank you all again for recognizing us.”

After Pedersen and Yarbrough’s sister sat down from the podium, Pollock reminisced about Riverside’s connection to the late clerk.

“I would be remiss, too, if I did not mention former Village President Joe Ballerine, who was a good friend of Karen’s and Judge Pedersen’s and texted me upon Mrs. Yarbrough’s death, saying that she was a valued friend of the Village of Riverside,” he said.
