SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A proposal that passed out of the Illinois Senate Thursday night could cap the monthly cost of inhalers for people with health insurance.

Illinoisans struggling with asthma and other lung diseases could pay just $25 for one prescription inhaler per month. 

Senate Bill 3203 would also prohibit health insurance companies from denying or limiting coverage for prescription inhalers starting January 1, 2026.

"No one should struggle to afford their medication while big companies profit," said Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago). "While insurance plans cover a portion of asthma treatment costs, we can do more to eliminate the barriers individuals face when trying to manage this long-term condition."

Sponsors said this could be a major change for many people paying between $180 to $300 per month for inhalers.

"Asthma is something that you can’t control and it can very quickly turn into a life threatening situation," said Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris).

Hunter thanked the American Lung Association and Illinois Respiratory Health Association for making this change possible. 

The legislation passed out of the Senate on a 53-2 vote. Senate Bill 3203 now moves to the House for further consideration.
