ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — With Illinois ranked 8th highest in the U.S. for human trafficking, a Rockford non-profit is launching a new program to help survivors.
Remedies Renewing Lives, a 24/7 domestic violence and addiction recovery center located at 220 Easton Pkwy, received grant funding from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority for the program, which will allow Remedies to provide specialized case management services to identify victims of human trafficking.
Human trafficking can consist of someone being forced or coerced into prostitution.
Organizers say, oftentimes, domestic violence and substance abuse can intersect with human trafficking cases.
Remedies’ Laurie Craciana explained, "You may have a victim arrive for domestic violence services, that can be trafficked. They don’t identify [themselves]. They’re fearful to identify. So, with extra case management and extra specialty programs being brought on, we’ll be able to go through that process and identify who these men or women are."
Remedies will be hiring two anti-human trafficking managers, and once those positions are filled, they will begin taking on new clients.
