Northfield Township Democratic Committee Person Tracy Katz Muhl is expected to be appointed to fill the recent vacancy of State Rep. Jonathan Carroll (D-57th) at a meeting of Democratic committee people tonight (Thursday) in Northbrook.
The meeting, which is open to the public, takes place at the Northbrook Public Library, 1201 Cedar Ln., at 7:45 p.m. It is expected to be followed by Katz Muhl taking the oath of office administered by Judge Mike Hyene, who lives in the 57th State House District, at Northbrook Village Hall next to the library after the committee meeting.
The process to fill the vacancy of a state representative involves holding a weighted vote of committee people of the party of the outgoing representative within the legislative district.
Katz Muhl is currently the only candidate, Democrat or Republican, who has filed to run for Carroll’s State House seat in the March 19 primary election. She is also the Northfield Township Democratic committee person and holds more than 50% of that weighted vote.
Other Democrats expected to vote on the appointment tonight are Wheeling Township Democratic Committeeman Mark Walker, who holds the second most weighted vote, New Trier Township Democratic Committeeman Dean Maragos, who holds the third most weighted vote, and Lake County Democratic Party Chairwoman Lauren Beth Gash, who holds the smallest weighted vote within the 57th District.
Gash said township committee people are used in the process in Cook County because Cook County is so large. The process is slightly different in Lake County as the population is smaller.
Katz Muhl said the appointment meeting is timely as the State House reconvenes on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Katz Muhl announced her candidacy for Carroll’s seat in the upcoming Democratic primary last May. On Friday, Jan. 5, Carroll announced he would resign his seat as of midnight that night.
Although there are currently no Republicans running for the seat, GOP committeemen could use a similar process to appoint a candidate to run for the 57th House Seat in November’s general election. That Republican would also need to collect the required nominating petition signatures.
The 57th District includes parts of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Glencoe, Glenview, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Northfield, Riverwoods, Wheeling, Wilmette, and Winnetka.
