Mayor Johnson selects Larry Snelling as next Chicago police superintendent

Johnson’s deadline to choose from three finalists or ask for new options is approaching

CHICAGO (WLS) — Mayor Brandon Johnson has chosen Larry Snelling as the next Chicago Police Department superintendent.

Snelling is the chief of CPD Bureau of Counterterrorism.

Sources told ABC7 the mayor would make the critical pick sometime Sunday as the deadline set by the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability approached.

Angel Novales and Shon Barnes were the other two candidates for the superintendent position remaining.

Novales and Snelling are both Chicago police veterans. Novales is the chief of constitutional policing.

Barnes was the one outsider among the candidates. He is currently the Madison, Wisconsin police chief. Barnes also worked for the Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability for one year.

Mayor Johnson had 30 days to make his pick or ask for new candidates, starting July 14.
