SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The state of Illinois is trying to make your visit to the DMV a more pleasant experience.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says going to the DMV has become something residents in the state have come to dread.
“Illinoisians are sick and tired of long lines, crowded waiting areas, and the unpredictability of how long they would be stuck at the DMV waiting for the service they needed,” Giannoulias said. “Many of the residents I talked with expect to have a negative experience with the DMV before they walk into the door. It’s been that way for years.”
That’s the motivation behind “Skip the Line,” a new program announced Thursday by Giannoulias.
One of the tenants of the program is making the 44 busiest DMV’s in the state appointment-only, including ones in Peoria and Pekin. Giannoulias says it’s become standard practice in today’s world to make appointments for nearly everything.
“Whether you need to get a haircut, an appointment with a doctor or a dentist, or get your car repaired, it’s easier for consumers when they have the opportunity to reserve a specific time that accommodates their schedule. That’s the world we live in now,” Giannoulias said.
Other portions of the program include a push to do more services online by simplifying the process, such as renewing driver’s licenses and vehicle stickers.
It also expands hours at all DMV’s in the state, with every facility moving from a Tuesday-Saturday schedule to a Monday-Friday schedule, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. 16 DMV’s in the state will also be open on Saturdays from 8:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
The changes go into effect on Sept. 1st.
