A top Illinois labor union is paying tribute to a worker who was killed on the job earlier this month at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, as part of a remembrance of fallen workers around the state and nation.

Friday’s ceremony at the Illinois AFL-CIO office in Springfield coincides with the 52nd anniversary of the creation of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA.

The ceremony honored Gregory Fields, who was killed while working on an HVAC system at the airport terminal on April 10th; OSHA is investigating his death.

The AFL-CIO says on-the-job deaths of workers are on the rise, particularly among Black workers, where the death rate is the highest in a decade.
