CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Tuesday marked a special occasion on the South Side, as the city marked the completion of one phase and start of another stage of an over $81 million housing development project.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot, joined by city officials and real estate developers, ceremoniously opened a nearly $38 million, 10-story apartment complex at 43rd and Calumet as well as broke ground for another 10-story housing development, this one at 43d and Prairie.
The transit-oriented development, called 43 Green, is a part of the INVEST South/West initiative, and will surround the 43rd Street CTA Green Line Station in Bronzeville.
“43 Green demonstrates what can arise when a city prioritizes investing in its neighborhoods. This development will ensure that Bronzeville residents can access all the employment, educational, and recreational opportunities throughout our city via convenient transit access while promoting a dense, mixed-use, and walkable corridor.”
The now open Phase I features 99 apartments, more than half of which will be affordable to those at 60% of the Area Median Income. The development also has 5,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.
The $44 million on Prairie will have 80 units, which will range from studio to two-bedroom.
Both buildings, occupying previously owned City-owned land, will possess fitness centers, rooftop terraces, laundry facilities, and parking.
“This development is the product of years of advocacy, negotiation, and community engagement,” said 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell. “43 Green is a step in the right direction and we still have a lot of work to do to ensure Bronzeville residents have access to reliable public transportation, affordable housing, and retail opportunities.”
