Some Illinois lawmakers are pushing for a permanent child tax credit.

That would mean up to $700 per child for eligible families. Those who would be eligible for the full amount are joint filers earning less than $75,000 per year and single filers earning less than $50,000 per year.

State Rep. Marcus Evans Jr., who is sponsoring a bill that would create the Illinois child tax credit, said the legislation is an effort to support to support low-income, working families. He said it can also create more revenue, with families having more spending power once they receive the credit.

Rosalia Salgado, a mother and vice president of POWER-PAC IL, said that money could lessen the economic burden on families. They could catch up on their bills or have money for activities with their children.

It could also mean mothers might feel more independence, Salgado said, especially for those who are ITIN filers.

“Maybe they can feel a little better about helping the family — a little easier life,” Salgado said.

Roberto Valdez Jr., Midwest policy director with the Hispanic Federation, said it’s a powerful way to give back to families hit hard by the pandemic — especially for Latino families being impacted by COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations.

“Families are still feeling the hurt from either losing a loved one who was the main bread winner or someone losing a job who was bringing in the majority of the income,” Valdez said.
