KENWOOD — It remains unclear who will face Rep. Lamont Robinson in the 4th Ward runoff, as two other candidates are within just a few votes of each other.
Robinson received 46.1 percent of the vote on Election Day, but Butler and Lucas remain close with 14.9 percent to 14.4 percent of the vote, respectively. Only 60 votes separate the two candidates.
And some votes still must be counted: Max Bever, spokesperson for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, said there are 1,706 outstanding mail-in ballots in the 4th Ward.
Not all of those ballots will necessarily be returned or counted, and ballots that do count may not all have logged a vote for alderperson, Bever said.
The official proclamation of results will be released March 15.
Six candidates competed to replace outgoing Ald. Sophia King, who finished eighth out of nine candidates in the mayoral race.
Credit: ProvidedWhile the 4th Ward has experienced a recent population boom, only about 11,600 of the ward’s 60,000 residents voted in Tuesday’s election, according to early results.
Robinson, the first openly LGBTQ Black state lawmaker, announced his candidacy in the fall days after Butler, King’s chief of staff and a fixture in the 4th Ward office since 2011. This is the first aldermanic run for both but the third for Lucas, who challenged King in 2017 and 2019.
The trio has landed key endorsements, with Robinson receiving the blessing of county board President Toni Preckwinkle, Butler getting the nod from King and Lucas winning the support of the Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance.
Butler and Lucas remain optimistic about their runoff chances. Lucas said she is taking a “wait-and-see approach.”
“Overwhelmingly, the ward is looking for change and an independent mind to lead, and [neighbors] do not want a machine candidate,” Lucas said.
