Abortion rights in Illinois could expand with bill amendment – Crain’s Chicago Business

The amendment calls for granting temporary licenses to health care providers from other states so they could perform abortions in Illinois. That would include physicians, physician assistants and advanced nurses.

The amendment also proposes having the Illinois Department of Public Health protect the right for advanced practice registered nurses in Illinois to perform reproductive health care services, including abortions.

Harmon also proposed requiring that health care license and registration renewals in Illinois come with a two-hour training course on reproductive health care, according to the amendment. But it would only apply to health care professionals who provide reproductive health care.

Sponsorship of the bill is still being worked out; Harmon is unlikely to be the final sponsor, the spokeswoman said. But she added that he submitted the amendment because he “believes in a woman’s right to access reproductive health care.”

The proposed amendment could help alleviate an overwhelming load of patients who have been seeking abortion care in Illinois since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year. Providers from Planned Parenthood of Illinois to the University of Chicago Medicine have seen upticks in the number of patients seeking the procedure as many neighboring states have tightly restricted abortion access.
