Illinois voters to decide whether to codify collective bargaining

Supporters say Amendment 1 aims to codify workers’ rights in Illinois. Opponents say it will raise property taxes. The outcome will be determined by voters in Tuesday’s election. The measure would put into the state constitution collective bargaining rights for wages, work conditions, and other issues. It’s been an with candidates for office choosing sides. Mailee Smith of the Illinois Policy Institute, a group that filed a lawsuit to block the measure, said that if passed, Illinois would be the only state with such a law.

Incumbent Democratic Illinois Comptroller Suzanna Mendoza said that is misinformation.

The question requires either three-fifths approval of those voting on the question or a simple majority of all votes cast in the election to be enacted.
