Chicago Mayor Lightfoot readies 43rd ward alderman appointment – Crain’s Chicago Business

Smith stepped down from the position on August 12, but because the City Council did not meet in August, Lightfoot anticipates her appointment to be confirmed at the September 21 meeting. A meeting of the Rules Committee–which must first approve the nominee before a vote by the full City Council–has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

This will be the third appointment Lightfoot has made: the first was Ald. Nicole Lee to replace convicted Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson, then Ald. Monique Scott to replace her brother, Michael. But it’s the first appointment during Chicago’s official municipal election campaign season, with candidates for office now circulating petitions to get on the ballot.

Whoever lands the gig will surely be pegged by other candidates in the race as tied to Lightfoot, who is not expected to have the same support along the North Lakefront in 2023 that she did when she won in 2019.

Any downside, though, is outweighed by having an incumbent’s advantage in a relatively low-turnout election. Proving how sought-after the appointment is, four candidates for the seat also applied for the appointment, including Knudsen, 2019 fifth place finisher Rebecca Janowitz, Brian Comer and Wendi Taylor Nations.

Jacob Ringer, who came in fourth in 2019, also applied and is among the finalists Lightfoot is said to be considering.
