POLITICS Queer businesswoman challenging Osterman in 48th Ward

Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth—a queer native Chicagoan and 23-year resident of Andersonville who also describes herself as a “mother of three, tango dancer, small business owner and community organizer”—announced her candidacy for 48th Ward alderwoman.

Harry Osterman is the current alderman of the ward, which sits on the North side of Chicago along Lake Michigan to the east and overlaps Uptown, Edgewater and Andersonville. However, after three terms, he recently said he is not seeking re-election. Fellow three-term Ald. James Cappleman (46th) also recently announced his retirement.

“With my years of experience creating and leading one of the strongest grassroots groups on the Northside, I’ve built coalitions that have prioritized civic engagement and participation in our political process,” said Manaa-Hoppenworth in a statement. “As a small business owner in Andersonville and a proven progressive leader in the neighborhood, I know there are opportunities to continue strengthening the communities of the 48th Ward. I’m running for alderwoman to take on these challenges.”

“The 48th Ward needs an alderperson who is a bridge-builder, who can coalesce our diverse constituencies and represent our common interests. As a community organizer, I’ve done just that: I have worked alongside community and government partners to build strong coalitions to advocate for civil rights and meaningful engagement of everyday people in our democracy.”
