FREEPORT (WREX) — Students at Empire School in Freeport will start a new environmental project on Wednesday.
In collaboration with Freeport School District 145 and The Rockford Park District, a group of team members will be plating twelve trees.
Staff will teach the kids about the science of tree planting as well as beautifying the school grounds.
One teacher says the students are very excited to get to work on this project.
"We started or K kids at our first meeting we talked about how we could help out our community so we brainstormed a list of problems that we see and ways that we can help and one way these kids were passionate about was the environment and taking care of their earth," Fourth Grade Teacher Katie Larrabee said.
The school hopes events like this will spark future generations of students to take care of the environment and their school the way these students did.
