City Explores CWLP’s Future After Coal Plants Close

Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder is working on the future of City Water Light and Power after 2045, when it’s effectively no longer in the business of burning coal to generate electricity.

Langfelder says the city is working on plans for a large solar farm that could replace some of the power generated by CWLP’s coal-fired plants.

The city is also looking at ways to use CWLP’s fiber-optic network to expand access to high-speed broadband Internet, at least in some parts of town. One option could be to partner with a private company to operate the network and provide Internet access points around Springfield.
