CHICAGO (WEEK) — A mask mandate is returning for all indoor spaces in Illinois. Governor JB Pritzker made the announcement Thursday at a COVID-19 health briefing.

The statewide mask mandate goes into effect Monday, August 30th. Everyone is required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

He also announced a vaccine mandate for all individuals who work in schools and healthcare settings, including all P-12 teachers and staff and all higher education students and staff.

If teachers and staff and college students are unable or unwilling get vaccinated by September 5th, the governor says they will be subject to weekly testing.

"To be clear, what I am announcing today is a floor. At a minimum, those who work in schools and healthcare settings should be vaccinated or tested, keeping our kids and our most vulnerable safe," Governor Pritzker said.

As statewide hospitalizations continue to rise, the governor says these new mitigations are being put in place to protect vulnerable populations in Illinois.

"Unfortunately we are running out of time, as our hospitals are running out of beds," the governor said.
