PEORIA (WEEK) — The Peoria County Sheriff teamed up with a state representative to host a free prescription drug drop-off Saturday morning in Peoria.
Representative Ryan Spain said it is a way to help promote safety and provide people with a chance to properly dispose of old medicine.
Before the event even started at 9:30 a.m., a huge line of cars pulled up – Spain said he and Sheriff Brian Asbell filled an entire large tote bag fairly quickly.
Spain said the drugs will be incinerated, which is the safest way to get rid of them for good.
"These are really potent, important substances and we all probably have accumulated a lot of them around our homes," Spain said. "This is one way we can offer a good service to our community and they can be disposed of effectively."
Spain said Saturday was also a good opportunity for him to speak with members of the community and discuss issues and ideas concerning the state of Illinois.
