Letter: A comprehensive energy bill must be passed for Illinoisans

In Illinois, we are lucky to rarely be without electricity. That would all change if the Byron and Dresden nuclear power plants are shut down. Without those plants, Illinois will suffer from frequent outages during heat waves and cold snaps, just like Texas did last winter.

Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois legislature need to finish the job of passing comprehensive energy legislation that invests in our nuclear power plants.

Without this bill, all of Illinois will suffer from variable electricity costs and increased reliance on coal and natural gas, the cheapest alternatives, as well as the most environmentally damaging.

Not only will we pay for the power shortage in our electric bills, we will also pay with our local economy. I write this letter as the director of the Byron Public Library District, someone who will be forced to let go of half of the staff, including myself, because of an indirect connection to the plant.

The outages in Texas last winter showed us how disastrous an outage can be.  Legislators, please pass a comprehensive energy bill, not just for me and my hardworking staff at the library, but for everyone in Illinois.
