CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WLS) — Government helicopters take off from a field on the grounds of McHenry County College, as crews unload equipment into the auditorium.
These are preparations for the arrival of the president. It will be the first time in Crystal Lake history they have hosted a sitting President. And they are excited.
"We’ve never had a President come to the college so it’s exciting," said Crystal Lake resident Wally Leckner.
The president’s agenda during his visit is still hush-hush.
Some in Crystal Lake’s downtown area are hoping he swings by the Kaleidascoops Ice Cream shop.
The owner of the clothes gallery next door is ready.
"When you’re out of town how fun is it to bring something home for your wife?" said Sherree Rothstein.
The visit is also very important for Democrats in the meantime state.
A slight majority of McHenry County voters voted for Donald Trump in the last election.
"I’m very excited about President Biden coming to Illinois. He is expected to talk about the American Families plan," said Governor J.B. Pritzker
He may also mention his plan for relieving student loans.
"I got some debt. President Joe if you wanna pay that off that would be amazing. Send it my way. I would gladly receive it," said Jordan Tratscher
"It is a sitting president coming to our community and I hope he brings a message of hope," said Kristina Zahorik, McHenry County Democratic chair.
Republican leaders however say they believe the President should visit Chicago and meet with Mayor Lightfoot about addressing the issues of crime and violence.
"There is a crisis going on in that city and it would be a dereliction of duty for him to fly over Chicago," said RNC spokesperson Paris Dennard.
Late this afternoon Mayor Lightfoot confirmed she will meet with the President. She says common-sense gun control laws will be her first priority in talks with Biden.
