Climate activists and community leaders gathered at Spaulding Dam in Springfield Friday in opposition to any delay or exemption in closing CWLP’s Coal Unit 3.
To that end, Nick Dodson of the Sierra Club rallied members of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good, calling on policy makers’ support for clean energy and social justice.
“We’re calling on Doris Turner, we’re calling on Tim Butler, and we’re also calling on Mike Murphy. We’re saying stand in solidarity with us. We want a clean environment, and we want it sooner [rather than] later.”
According to Tyshianna Bankhead of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good, there’s little difference between environmental justice and social equity.
“I believe they’re one in the same. A just transition for coal workers means a just transition for minority communities to be a part of clean jobs and clean energy. It is a social justice issue.”
