Mony Ruiz-Velasco will join Equality Illinois as its inaugural Deputy Director beginning July 15.

Ruiz-Velasco has represented and counseled hundreds of LGBTQ families and asylum seekers who were seeking protection from persecution; also, she has worked on legislation that would benefit LGBTQ immigrants at the national level.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Ruiz-Velasco works with Alianza Americas. She has also been executive director of P.A.S.O.-West Suburban Action Project and an immigration-rights attorney at her own firm.

“Over the years, we have worked with Mony as both a community partner and a Board member. There are few talents in Illinois so exceptional in building broad coalitions to capture our state’s biggest opportunities as Mony,” Equality Illinois CEO Brian C. Johnson said in a press release.
