Legislators look to tackle Illinois’ teacher shortage crisis


A shortage of teachers continues to be a problem across Illinois, but new legislation at the Capitol aims to begin addressing the issue. “This is crisis mode. ” That’s how State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, describes the over 1,700 open teaching positions statewide. It’s nearly 4,500 if you include classroom aids and support staff. “It is the largest teaching shortage there’s every been in the state of Illinois, and perhaps nationwide,” Scherer said. “That’s where my bill came from. “
