SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- A House Democrat asked his colleagues to recognize another young man from Chicago that police killed last month.

A Chicago police officer shot 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez after they chased him down an alley on March 31st. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released body camera footage Wednesday showing the officer shooting Alvarez in the back five times. Alvarez ended up collapsing on his side walk in front of his home.

While the video shows Alvarez had a gun, he never aimed at police. Rep. Will Guzzardi (D-Chicago) asked his colleagues to look in the mirror and ask why they were once again mourning the loss of a young latino. He emphasized his constituent died following actions by those meant to protect him.

"There’s nothing you can do, no record on your background, no affiliations, no history, nothing you can do to deserve being shot in the back while you run," said Guzzardi. "Let me repeat that. There is nothing Anthony could have done to deserve the fate that befell him."

Guzzardi emphasized that lawmakers should focus on passing legislation that would make sure police aren’t responsible for too many things. He feels the large amount of tasks officers face on a daily basis lead to too many unfortunate outcomes.

"This is not an inditement of any bad apples," Guzzardi said. "But rather of the very role that we have given to law enforcement, a role that they didn’t ask for and that they don’t want, and a role that leads inexorability to the kind of tragedy that we mourn yet again today."

Guzzardi also said that Illinois needs to transform the role of police officers to prevent greater tragedies from taking place.
