CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. – In light of the Illinois House of Representatives setting
procedural rules that term limit leadership positions, state Rep. Anthony
DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, recently filed legislation to permanently codify the
changes into law.
“My legislation would make leadership term limits permanent,” DeLuca said. “While we did vote on and pass a set of rules that for the first time in Illinois House of Representatives history included term limits for leadership positions, it’s effectively only binding for the current legislative session.”
DeLuca’s House Bill 642 would limit all leadership positions for both parties and both chambers to 10 years per member. If the legislation were to pass General Assembly and be signed into law it would take effect at the start of the 103rd General Assembly. Currently the bill has strong bipartisan support with 16 House Democrats and 23 House Republicans serving as co-sponsors.
“This legislation has extremely strong bipartisan support, so my hope is that it can quickly advance through the legislature and be signed into law, “DeLuca said. “This is the next step in a series of reforms we can make as a legislative body to restore the public’s trust in state government.”
