This time, Cook County Democratic Committee members picked Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar, who had finished second to Edward Guerra Kodatt, who was sworn in on Sunday but resigned Wednesday. Guerrero-Cuella is the manager of operations at Envision Community Services.
Former Rep. Mike Madigan and four other Cook County Democratic Committee members met again Thursday to pick a successor for the longtime state representative, this time choosing Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar to fill the seat.
The appointment took roughly five minutes.
Guerrero-Cuellar was nominated by Madigan and 23rd Ward Committeeperson and Ald. Silvana Tabares. State Rep. Aaron Ortiz, who represents the 14th Ward as its committeeperson, nominated Silvia Villa.
Guerrero-Cuellar lives in the 23rd Ward and is the manager of operations at Envision Community Services.
Edward Guerra Kodatt, Madigan’s first choice, had been selected and sworn in on Sunday. But he resigned from the Illinois General Assembly on Wednesday, the day after Madigan and Chicago Ald. Marty Quinn issued a statement urging him to step down amid allegations of “questionable conduct” — though their statement did not say what that conduct was.
Kodatt did not respond to requests for comment.
Madigan, 78, who has enough of the required vote to single-handedly make the appointment, threw his support behind Guerrero-Cuellar shortly after Kodatt resigned.
