CHICAGO — Mayor Lori Lightfoot was again caught in a hot mic moment Wednesday during a virtual City Council meeting.

The mayor was heard muttering to herself after Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33rd) finished speaking about a Black History Month resolution Wednesday.

“You’ve got to be f–king kidding me,” Lightfoot said, before thanking Rodriguez Sanchez for her comments and recognizing Ald. Jim Gardiner (45th) to speak next.

The moment caused a stir on Twitter, where people speculated Lightfoot was talking about Rodriguez-Sanchez. The alderman quickly put that rumor to rest.

“She texted me and said she was talking about something brought to her by her staff,” Rodriguez-Sanchez said following the mayor’s gaffe.

Asked if she believed the mayor’s explanation, Rodriguez-Sanchez said, “Lol. I don’t think I said anything during my speech that granted those words. So, yes.”

A mayor’s office spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

This isn’t the first time the mayor has said more than she meant to in public. In 2019, Lightfoot was heard calling Patrick Murray from the Fraternal Order of Police an “FOP clown” during a City Council hearing.
