Former Chicago Ald. Marty Oberman is now in charge of a federal agency.
President Joe Biden has named Oberman chairman of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.
Oberman, who was named to a Democratic post on the five-member board in 2019 by Donald Trump, has been vice chairman. Now he’ll have a little more clout, but STB is known as a generally harmonious agency without much partisan fighting.
The board mostly regulates and resolves disputes involving railroads, such as when steps need to be taken to prevent freight trains from blocking traffic. It also has some powers over other service providers, such as moving vans.
Oberman’s current term expires in January 2023. An attorney by trade, he lives in the Lincoln Park neighborhood he represented on the City Council when he was 43rd Ward alderman from 1975-87. He was also chairman of Metra from 2014 until he was replaced in 2016.
