After hours of closed-door debate among Illinois House Democrats, Mike Madigan still lacks the votes to hang on to his role as Speaker. But so far, no other Democrat can reach the 60-vote threshold necessary, either.
Madigan is fighting for his political survival after being linked to the Commonwealth Edison bribery scandal. 19 of the 73 House Democrats repeated their opposition to Madigan in a statement issued Sunday. And reports say a vote of the caucus produced only 51 votes for Madigan, with 18 votes for Representative Ann Williams and three for Representative Stefanie Kifowit, with one House Democrat voting “present.”
The formal vote for Speaker is expected at the start of the new legislative session on Wednesday.
