The number of votes separating Republican incumbent state Rep. John Cabello and Democratic challenger Dave Vella shrank again on Friday after the city updated its unofficial election results.
The spread between Cabello and Vella went from 812 Tuesday night to 358 on Wednesday to 323 on Friday.
The city plans to count and post remaining ballots in the race periodically until Nov. 17, when it will update numbers for the final time and certify the election results. The county, which also processes votes in this race, doesn’t plan to share any additional vote totals until Nov. 17.
Mail-in ballots that are received by either election office in the days following the election must be counted if they are postmarked on or before Election Day.
With 50,885 votes tallied — some from the county’s election office and some from the city’s — Cabello is leading with 50.32% of the vote to Vella’s 49.68%, according to unofficial results.
The city added 291 votes on Friday, 107 of them in the 68th District. On Wednesday, it added 2,966 votes, 1,284 in the 68th.
Of the 1,391 votes that have been added to the totals in this race since election night, Vella has gotten 68% to Cabello’s 32%.
This year saw record numbers of requests for vote-by-mail ballots in both the city and county. Nearly 45,000 ballots were mailed to voters in the weeks leading up to the election.
Vella, 49, is a lawyer. Cabello, 49, is a police detective.
The 68th House District includes sections of northwest and east Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park and Cherry Valley.
