BLOOMINGTON (HOI) — Tari Renner is not seeking a third term.
The Bloomington mayor made that announcement today, saying he is making this decision after "diligent consideration" and that he is confident that the leadership stepping forward will continue the progress made.
"Nearly eight years ago I was given the privilege of serving the people of Bloomington as Mayor," he said."I have witnessed historic moments for our community and met countless residents who have inspired me and am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve."
Renner has been mayor of Bloomington since 2013. According to a release from the city, the mayor has focused on infrastructure, economic development, revitalization of downtown Bloomington and efforts to increase transparency — earning the city an award from the Illinois Policy Institute.
Ward 1 council member Jaime Mathy noted Renner’s “energy and passion for working with minority communities, and his leadership on building and funding our award-winning plan to pay down Bloomington pension debt.”
Ward 7 council member Scott Black also noted his "endless passion and boundless energy."
"He never waivers from the things he believes – a rare attribute in politics," he said.
Renner serve out the remainder of his term. Municipal elections for mayor and odd numbered wards are on April 6, 2021.
