Renowned feminist, writer and activist Gloria Steinem voiced her support for Dani Brzozowski in a news release Wednesday, endorsing the candidate for Illinois District 16 who looks to unseat incumbent Adam Kinzinger.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, running for re-election in the 16th District, and Brzozowski, of La Salle, is vying for the congressional seat in the November General Election.

In a statement, Steinem said the differences between Kinzinger and Brzozowski is a matter of gender equality.

“Sometimes there is a huge difference between candidates,” Steinem said. “For instance, Dani Brzozowski believes women have a right to make our own reproductive decisions, but Adam Kinzinger wants to put our bodies under government control. She supports the Paycheck Fairness Act, but he voted against it. She supports the ERA that would make women equal under the Constitution, and he didn’t care enough to vote at all. If you believe in equality, economic fairness and showing up for work every day, send Dani Brzozowski to Washington.”

In a news release, Brzozowski said she’s humbled to have Steinem’s endorsement.

“I am humbled to have the support of such a legendary figure in the fight for equality,” she said. “Gloria Steinem is a personal hero of mine and has been an inspiration to millions. Gloria Steinem recognizes that I will help lead the fight for gender equality – and equality for all – in Congress, and her support is a powerful symbol of the excitement our campaign has garnered.”

Brzozowski is a former small-business owner of Sweet Sadie’s Playspace, an indoor play space and children’s activity center, and current chairwoman of the La Salle County Democrats. She also has received endorsements from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin D-Illinois; U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville; U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville; U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Kankakee; Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs; and several political action committees, including End Citizens United, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the National Organization for Women and the Illinois AFL-CIO.
