Top Democrats in the Senate have asked their fellow lawmakers to provide coronavirus funding to pork producers who’ve had to depopulate their pig herds, according to The Hill.

Democratic Sens. Tina Smith of Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Dick Durbin of Illinois sent a letter asking to give pork producers 85% reimbursements for the value of their loss after many pork processing plants were closed down after the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the United States.

The senators said producers also need money to install safety equipment to protect employees from coronavirus.

In May, a bipartisan group of senators also called on Congress to fund U.S. pork producers.

Pork processing plants were targeted by coronavirus during the onset of the pandemic, closing the Smithfield plant in South Dakota in April. That plant has reopened since then, and produces up to 5% of all pork in the United States.

On April 28, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to keep meat processing plants open.
