While some Illinois lawmakers are urging for the reopening of restaurants as early as June 1, longtime State Rep. Marty Moylan (D-55th) of Des Plaines, prefers a much more deliberate wait and see attitude.

“I’m not going to push for anything until the scientists and medical experts say it’s OK,” said Moylan late last week. “When the time comes for restaurants to open, people will be very cautious about going. They won’t be rushing the doors until they feel comfortable. I don’t think it’s wise to push for anything now.”

As reported in the May 13 Journal & Topics, State Rep. Brad Stephens (R-20th), who is also mayor of Rosemont, suggested that entertainment-related businesses like restaurants and movie theaters should be allowed to reopen to the public on June 1. He argued that numerous protective measures have been in place such as social distancing and wearing masks meaning the public is well aware of what to do when they leave their homes. Stephens said if customers and restaurant owners and their staffs are comfortable with opening they should have the right to do so on June 1 rather than waiting until June 26, which is part of Gov. Pritzker’s 5-Phase Recover Illinois plan.

“People are smart enough. We know it will take some time for restaurants to get back to solid business. But appropriate cautions can be taken, It can be done safely,” Stephens explained. The village of Rosemont is home to numerous restaurants, bars and hotels.

“When the OK is given to allow restaurants to reopen,” said Moylan, “people will make their own decisions if they feel it’s safe. When restaurants open there will likely be social distancing and people will still be wearing masks.”
