State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr. said in the statement that the public hearing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic "violates common sense as well as the intent of federal and state guidelines to flatten the curve."
The meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday includes a public hearing and possible vote on NorthPoint Development’s application for an pre-annexation agreement on 1,260 acres for its proposed Compass Business Park.
The project has faced intense residential opposition.
Joliet plans to hold the hearing under newly implemented social distancing standards that bar the public from attending but allows people to send emails ahead of the meeting and phone in at the time of the hearing.
McGuire and Walsh question the process put in place.
"To hold this important vote when residents are unable to address the mayor and council in person jeopardizes the democratic process," the statement says. "Government works best when ample opportunity is provided for those affected by its decisions to voice their views. The procedure set by the City of Joliet for public comment at the forthcoming meeting falls far short of this.
"Please postpone the NorthPoint vote until circumstances allow the vote to be taken in a safe, transparent and accountable manner," the statement says.
City officials said they consulted with the Illinois Attorney General’s office about the arrangements made while Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order is in force.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
