State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant will officially announce her campaign for Will County executive on Thursday at a kickoff event in Joliet.

Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, will be the second Democrat to enter the race to succeed current Will County executive, Larry Walsh Sr., who announced last month that he would not seek reelection in 2020. Walsh has been undergoing cancer treatment.

Her campaign kickoff event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m Thursday at the Teamsters Local 179 building at 1000 NE Frontage Road in Joliet.

The state legislator previously said she was very interested in a full-time job in Will County.

She was first elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2012 to represent the 49th State Senate District. Her current term in the Senate ends in 2021.

Walsh’s chief of staff, Nick Palmer, already announced his campaign to vie for the Democratic nomination. Palmer has worked under Walsh since he was first elected to the county executive seat in 2004.

Former Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello announced he would run for county executive as a Republican. Ficarello spent four years leading Braidwood’s police department and previously worked in the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The Illinois primary will be held March 17.
