State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said she is considering a run for Will County executive in 2020.
Will County Clerk records show Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, pulled a nominating petition for county executive on Wednesday, but she said she has made no official decision about her plans for the next election. Her current term in the Illinois Senate ends in 2021. Bertino-Tarrant confirmed Thursday she was meeting with local leaders about the decision and said she would make her announcement once she feels comfortable doing so.
“It’s an ongoing discussion,” she said.
She said if she decided to run for Will County executive, she would fulfill her duties as state senator until her term ends. Bertino-Tarrant was first elected to represent the 49th Senate District in 2012. She’s served as the chair of the Senate Education Committee, co-chair of the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force and vice-chair of the Labor Committee.
“I have been able to go to Springfield and accomplish many things,” she said.
The former educator and principal also served as the Will County regional superintendent before the state senate.
Current Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., D-Elwood, announced this month he would not seek reelection in 2020 to the seat he’s held for nearly 15 years.
