Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs today became the first major Democrat in the state to put down a presidential bet, throwing his endorsement to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
In a statement posted on his website, Frerichs, who is well to the political left on economic issues, lauded Warren for her progressive stances on everything from financial aid to college students to slowing climate change.
“While others paid lip service to reform while cashing lobbyist checks, Elizabeth challenged the status quo and refused to be bought,” Frerichs said. “She is focused, tireless, and the right person to lead us in our fight against corruption.”
Warren returned the compliment, terming Frerichs “a stalwart guardian for investments in Illinois and a fierce advocate for consumers.”
The endorsement gives Warren guaranteed access to a political organization that has a presence in every corner of the state. And it will elevate Frerichs’ name in a state in which Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and U.S Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth seem inclined to stick around for a while.
