The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the appointment of State Senator John Mulroe (D-10) as a Cook County Circuit judge in the 10th Judicial Subcircuit, replacing the retiring Thomas Allen, who is a former Chicago alderman.

The appointment is effective Friday, June 21, and all eyes will now be on the area’s Democratic committeemen, including Robert Martwick, Tim Heneghan and John Arena, as they will choose Mulroe’s replacement to be the next state senator. Mulroe’s replacement will have to run for election in 2020.

Mulroe’s appointment as judge runs through Dec. 7, 2020, as he will have to run for election next year if he wants to retain the seat.

Mulroe, who is a former Cook County assistant state’s attorney, has served in the Illinois General Assembly for the 10th Senate District since 2010.

“I am thrilled and honored by this appointment. I consider it a privilege to serve on the bench and continue my life in public service. I’ve wanted to be on the bench for a long time so this is a dream come true for me,” Mulroe said. “I want to thank Justice Theis for the opportunity to serve as well as Senate President John Cullerton for everything that I have learned from him. I also would like to thank my wife and family for their support.”

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis recommended Mulroe’s appointment after candidates were reviewed by bar associations and a special judicial screening committee.
