This is in response to the letter: “Sosnowski has done an amazing job serving constituents.” The author made an attempt to characterize Rep. Joe Sosnowski as supporting SB 1947 because it delivered $202 million more in funding to Chicago Public Schools. He went on to further assert that Rep. Sosnowski supported the evidence-based funding model for public school funding. The evidence contradicts that.

In a release dated Aug. 1, 2017, Rep. Sosnowski argued that the evidence-based funding model contained within SB 1 creates a new system for funding our public schools that is far too complicated. He also argued that the legislature should reject SB 1 because it provided a bailout for CPS at the expense of downstate public schools.

When Gov. Rauner amendatory vetoed the funding model within SB 1 and the $202 million in additional funding it contained, Rep. Sosnowski supported this action. It was not until an agreement contained within SB 1947 transferred $75 million in funding from public school funding to a scholarship program that benefits students from private schools that Rep. Sosnowski agreed with the funding model. It should be noted that Rep. Sosnowski is also director of institutional advancement at a Rockford-area private school.

I support the right of every parent in Illinois to send their child to a private school. But, public school funding should not be sacrificed to fund that private education. Well-funded public schools benefit everyone in the community by training a workforce that potential businesses need. They drive the economy. Public schools are accountable to the taxpayers of Illinois; private schools are not. Certainly, state legislators can’t do an amazing job if they make policy that supports a tiny minority of their constituency.

Angie Bodine, Democratic candidate to replace Sosnowski, has vowed to represent the entire district.
