WSIL – A new attack ad in the Illinois governor’s race hits on a familiar theme.

“JB Pritzker wants to raise our income taxes, but worse yet, he wants a car tax which will also come along with a tracking device,” the ad says.

This time, a new claim from Bruce Rauner’s campaign that Democrat JB Pritzker wants to implement a vehicle miles traveled tax.

“How much is that going to cost us, just to drive to a family member’s house?” the ad says.

The Pritzker campaign responded quickly, by putting out its own ad refuting the claim.

“Bruce Rauner is now completely making things up,” the ad says. “JB Pritzker has never proposed a vehicle mileage tax.”

In an editorial board meeting with the Daily Herald in January, Pritzker called the idea of a miles traveled tax “something we should look at” saying it should be only be a test at this point.

While this is Pritzker floating the idea, it’s a far shot from an actual proposal like Rauner’s ad implies.

The ad also claims that along with the tax, the state will install a tracking device on your car.

But there’s no evidence to support that claim.

While a tracking device is one way miles could be recorded, tests in other states include mostly non-technological ways to track miles, including self reporting.

So while Pritzker did mention he was open to the idea of tests on a vehicle miles traveled tax, saying he wants the tax and that it would come with a tracking device is a stretch.

We rate Rauner’s claim as mostly false.
