SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill moving in the Illinois House could help create long-term solutions for affordable housing.
The plan could require the state to facilitate public-private partnerships for affordable housing by using the Comprehensive Housing Plan and Progress Report.
This legislation states that Illinois should encourage sustainable and environmentally resilient housing programs and promote the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in affordable housing development.
"It expands the bill stated housing goals by addressing displacement, vacancy and abandonment," said Rep. Curtis Tarver (D-Chicago). "It also keeps the three-year strong planning structure, but it has annual updates and annual progress reporting."
Tarver said the bill includes people needing permanent supportive housing, veterans, survivors of gender-based violence and children as priority populations for housing.
The plan passed out of the House Housing Committee on a partisan 12-5 vote Wednesday. House Bill 5424 now moves to the House floor for further consideration.
