A lineup of speakers representing the area are scheduled to attend this Wednesday’s press conference where they will talk about the reasons why the Chicago Bears redevelopment proposal should proceed on the site of the former Arlington Park racetrack in Arlington Heights.
The event will be hosted by Touchdown Arlington, a group of local business leaders and residents supporting the proposal, and Chicago Northwest, an organization of business leaders from several northwest suburbs.
The program will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights.
The professional football team and the village had been engaging in negotiations for the last three years about moving the franchise from Soldier Field in downtown Chicago to a new multi-billion dollar stadium on the 326-acre former race track. About two years ago, the team purchased the property, but a decision on whether the state will provide some of the funding has not materialized. Meanwhile, the state of Indiana is aggressively trying to lure the Bears to a site near Hammond.
“Attendees to Wednesday’s conference will be local officials, including but not limited to mayors, trustees, state representatives, village/city managers, township supervisors, park district and Cook County commissioners,” said a statement. Among the speakers will be Arlington Heights Mayor Jim Tinaglia, Rolling Meadows Mayor Lara Sanoica, and State Rep. Mary Beth Canty.
Heather Larson of Chicago Northwest and Ernie Rose of Touchdown Arlington will present welcoming remarks.
“As discussions continue in Springfield, regional leaders are emphasizing the importance of keeping this one-in-a-generation economic development opportunity in Illinois,” added the statement. “Speakers will address the economic, infrastructure, and community impacts of the project—and the urgency of passing enabling legislation to prevent the development from moving out of the state.”
