An internal poll released Tuesday by State Sen. Laura Fine’s congressional campaign shows the Glenview state senator and Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss tied for first place in the race to replace Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) in the U.S. Congress.

The poll, shared with Evanston Now Tuesday, was conducted between Jan. 26 and Jan. 29 and showed Fine and Biss tied for first place at 21%. The polling memo shows 23% remained undecided.

Kat Abughazaleh, the 26-year-old former journalist and progressive political content creator, sat in third place with 14% support, similar to her support in an internal poll released by her campaign in October.

State Sen. Mike Simmons (7%), Skokie School Board Member Bushra Amiwala (4%), former FBI agent Phil Andrew (4%), State Rep. Hoan Huynh (2%) all trail, with the remaining candidates at 3% collectively.

Fine’s internal poll is the first poll conducted for her campaign to be released publicly, and the fourth publicly released poll in total, following internals from both Abughazaleh and Biss last fall.

Biss’ internal, conducted in early November, showed him with a significant lead over the field at 31%. An independent poll, commissioned by an organization that later endorsed Abughazaleh, released a poll in November as well that showed Abughazaleh and Biss tied for first at 18%. In that poll, Fine trailed at 10%.

The memo for Fine’s internal indicates the campaign conducted a poll in mid-November, with results at the time showing Biss in first at 21%, followed by Abughazaleh (14%), Fine (13%), Simmons (10%), Amiwala (5%), Huynh (4%), Andrew (1%) and 28% of voters undeicded.

The polls were conducted by D.C.-based GBAO Strategies, with the memo saying Fine’s “strongest support comes from the most likely voters to turnout” (voters 50+) and voters outside Chicago.

The memo described the poll results as evidence of Fine’s campaign “picking up steam while the field remains stagnant.”

On Sunday, end-of-year financial disclosures were released, showing Fine closed a significant fundraising gap between her, Biss and Abughazaleh with a significant influx of out-of-state contributions, a fact both Biss’ and Simmons’ campaigns raised issues with.

In-person early voting in Evanston begins in early March, with election day on Tuesday, Mar. 17.
