LaShawn Ford brings to this race the steady hand of experience and the heart of a public servant who listens. He is a champion of the people. As a respected State Legislator representing the 8th District since 2007, Ford has built a record rooted in service, substance, and results. He has served on critical committees, including Higher Education, Financial Institutions, Insurance, and Veterans Affairs, where he has addressed issues that directly affect working families and vulnerable communities.
Ford understands the real affordability challenges facing Americans today—from the rising cost of college to access to healthcare through Medicaid. These are not abstract policy debates for him; they are lived concerns voiced by constituents he has consistently listened to and represented with diligence and care.
One of the most significant pieces of legislation that Ford led was the creation of a Çannabis Registration Program that allows minorities to obtain licenses. Governor JB Pritzker says it is the most significant bill he has passed. The Cannabis Licensing Program helps build legacy and generational wealth. Black people previously could not obtain licenses without this bill. Legislation making cannabis registration available for minorities to obtain licenses has been a top priority. The cannabis licensing program helps build legacy and generational wealth as a new industry. Ford says that “listening to the community gives him the ability to develop impact.”
Another significant legislative accomplishment was the expansion of HIV Testing. His legislation removed the intrusive parts of the routine test, allowing people to opt out. It is now part of routine medical checkups.
Another critical issue was “Ban the Box,” which affects ex-offenders and prevents them from employment.
An experienced legislator, Ford understands the dynamics of small businesses, economic development, and community stability. He has led community action to confront the opioid crisis, bringing people together to address one of the most devastating public health challenges of our time. His leadership style is defined by accessibility and transparency—he holds town halls, convenes emergency hearings, listens carefully, and, quite simply, he answers his phone. His State experience has prepared him for the national stage.
LaShawn Ford is deeply concerned about America’s inequities and prepared to confront them head-on. He will enter Congress with a firm grasp of the issues and the authority that comes from years of hands-on legislative work. His commitment to public service reflects the legacy of Congressman Danny Davis, whose example of principled leadership Ford is well prepared to continue.
A former history teacher, Ford understands students and families firsthand and knows the value of hard work. His work ethic is second to none, and he is results-oriented—focused not on rhetoric, but on outcomes.
The 7th Congressional District is one of the most demographically diverse districts in the nation. It deserves a representative with experience, empathy, and integrity. LaShawn Ford is the best candidate in this race to represent the district’s people, values, and future.
