Chicago Health Leaders Rally to Defend 340B as Safety Net During Uncertain Times

LINCOLN SQUARE — As federal budget cuts and health care uncertainties ripple through communities nationwide, Illinois health leaders are working to reassure patients that critical care and medications remain within reach. That message will be front and center Sunday, February 1, when patients, advocates, and providers gather for 340B Saves Lives Action Day: A Community Celebration at 3401 W. Roosevelt Road.

Organized with the support of the Illinois Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) and a broad coalition of health care allies, the event will begin with a 2:30 p.m. press conference, followed by a public celebration from 3 to 4 p.m. Organizers say the goal is to remind Chicagoans that the 340B Drug Pricing Program remains a vital bridge to affordable care—especially during times of economic and policy instability.

According to the event’s media alert, “The 340B program allows eligible hospitals and community health centers to stretch limited resources, providing affordable medications and essential health care services to low-income, urban and rural uninsured patients.” For many families, those savings are the difference between filling a prescription and skipping treatment altogether.

IPHCA represents dozens of community health centers across Illinois, including many in Chicago neighborhoods. These clinics serve as a front door to care for patients who are uninsured, underinsured, or navigating complex health challenges. Through 340B, those centers can keep medications affordable, expand services, and maintain access even when other funding streams are threatened.

But organizers warn that “ongoing attacks to the discount drug program threaten patients’ access to care and could force providers to cut critical programs and services.” As federal health budgets tighten and uncertainty grows, health leaders say protecting 340B at the state level is more important than ever.

The alert underscores the stakes: “The future of 340B is at risk.” Without action, it states, “patients lose access to affordable, lifesaving medications and safety net providers will be forced to close their doors.”

Sunday’s event will feature patient speakers and leaders from across the health care safety net, including Dr. James Brooks of Lawndale Christian Health Center, Mahomed Ouedraogo of Access Community Health Network, Dr. Lisa Green of Family Christian Health Center, and Dr. Ngozi Ezike of Sinai Chicago.

For residents of neighborhoods like Lincoln Square and beyond, advocates say the message is simple: even in uncertain times, community health centers and safety-net hospitals are here—and 340B helps keep them that way.

By bringing together patients, providers, and policymakers, IPHCA and its partners hope to ensure that all Chicagoans know they can still access the medications and care they need. The rally is both a call to action and a promise of stability: that in the face of change, Illinois’ health care safety net will continue to stand.
