Ald. Tom Suffredin (6th) became the latest councilmember to weigh in on the crowded Democratic primary race to succeed outgoing U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) on Friday, backing State Sen. Laura Fine (D-Glenview).

Suffredin called Fine “a true public servant” and wrote she “puts her constituents ahead of any personal gain” in a Friday news release from Fine’s campaign.

“She’s not afraid to stand up for what is right and fight the difficult battles on behalf of working families,” he wrote. “Because of her leadership, commitment, and dedication to our community, I’m supporting her to become our next representative in Congress.”

Suffredin’s announcement comes two days after fellow councilmember Ald. Matt Rodgers (8th) endorsed State Sen. Mike Simmons (D-Chicago), becoming the first councilmember to publicly support a candidate other than Mayor Daniel Biss.

Biss has garnered endorsements from all other councilmembers, except for Alds. Clare Kelly (1st) and Parielle Davis (7th) — two longtime Biss critics who have yet to announce endorsements of any candidate.

FEC records show Suffredin donated $250 to another candidate — former FBI negotiator Phil Andrew — in September.

But on Friday, Fine touted her working relationship with Suffredin and wrote that she’s proud to accept his support.

“Tom knows what’s keeping working families up at night,” Fine wrote. “Together, we will put the needs of our communities first.”
