ROCKFORD, Ill. (WREX) — Illinois State Sen. Dave Syverson (R) and Sen. Steve Stadelman (D) both highlighted significant legislative achievements for 2025, focusing on public safety, economic growth, and consumer protections.

Sen. Syverson pointed out new laws addressing squatter issues and speeding up missing persons reports to enhance public safety. He expressed frustration with Illinois’ increased spending and taxation, particularly on rentals, cell phones, and tips for working mothers. Sen. Syverson contrasted this with nine other states that lowered taxes in 2025.

Looking towards 2026, Sen. Syverson emphasized the importance of improving the job climate to stimulate economic growth. "You can grow your way into prosperity. You just can’t tax your way into prosperity," Sen. Syverson said. He called for bipartisan cooperation to tackle job creation, public safety, and healthcare reform, urging a focus on the well-being of Illinois families.

Reflecting on the year, Sen. Syverson encouraged residents to focus on positives, stating, "We still live in the greatest country in the world."

Sen. Stadelman highlighted the elimination of the state grocery tax starting January 1, though some residents may still face local grocery taxes. He also noted new gun safety measures, including increased storage requirements and mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms.

Sen. Stadelman also shed light on a new law, which mandates fitness centers to notify members 60 days in advance of any changes to membership fees or benefits, aiming to prevent unexpected cost increases.

Sen. Stadelman expressed pride in legislative progress, particularly in energy cost reduction and transit improvements, while acknowledging challenges in balancing the state budget amid economic slowdowns.

Looking forward, Sen. Stadelman anticipates significant developments in 2026, including construction for passenger rail service between Chicago and Rockford and upgrades at the Belvidere Assembly Plant. He noted the upcoming election year as pivotal, with many incumbents not seeking re-election, potentially reshaping Illinois politics.
