Drivers in Illinois will see stricter enforcement of the hands-free driving law starting in 2026. Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer explains what drivers need to know.

“The hands free driving law becomes much stricter. Basically, it says that you cannot touch your phone at all while operating your vehicle, even while you’re stopped in traffic. Keep that in mind. I know there’s a lot of people that still grab at their phone, make phone calls, that type of thing. This kind of puts a little more meat behind that statue by saying you can’t touch your phone at all.”

This law is designed to cut down on distracted driving in Illinois.
